Vascular diseases pertain to blood vessels and include aneurysms, chronic occlusive arterial disease, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot deep in a vein), hardening of the arteries, carotid artery disease and chronic venous insufficiency (where blood begins to pool in veins). Treatable if addressed by a specialist, these problems can become serious if ignored.
Even more dangerous is the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA – a ballooning of the aorta that can make the arterial wall dangerously thin and prone to rupture, which in most cases leads to death.
SMHC is the only facility in the Southern Maryland area that offers an innovative procedure by specially trained vascular surgeons – called a stent graft – to repair abdominal aortic aneurysms and carotid artery due to carotid stenosis. The Vascular Center of Southern Maryland has state of the art testing procedures and the very best surgeons trained in the field of Vascular Diseases.
In most cases, symptoms of vascular diseases are subtle, therefore, a thorough annual physical should be completed by your physician, which can include ultrasounds, MRI, CT scans, angiography studies and simple Doppler exams.
Southern Maryland Hospital Center now offers free AAA screening ultrasounds on the Health Express Vanto individuals in our community ages 40 and older. This ultrasound is performed free of charge and without a doctor’s order by a certified Sonography Technologist, and is reviewed by a Radiologist at Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
