SERIOUS TREATMENT IN SERIOUS TIMES.

Critical Care at SMHC includes the Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiac Care Unit. Patients in these areas are being continuously monitored and managed by a variety of health care professionals – physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians, who are specially trained to work with critically ill patients. Critical care doctors, known as Intensivists, are present around-the-clock and ready to handle any emergencies that may arise.

The Intensivists are “family friendly” and will be glad to answer any questions you may have. The bedside nurse is also an excellent source of information and will be able to update you on the patient’s condition each time you call or visit. For difficult cases, family meetings may be arranged to explain what’s going on and to help clarify treatment options. Please inquire if you feel such a meeting would be helpful.

Family ParticipationVisitors

Family Participation Program

If you would like to assist with the care of your loved one, ask the nurse to explain our Family Participation Program. You will be taught to provide various aspects of nursing care under the direct supervision of the RN. Patients and families alike find these activities very rewarding.

On admission, each family will be asked to select a spokesperson for our Family Phone Line. The designated spokesperson should make the call and will be the primary contact who relays information to other family members and friends. You may speak to the nurse and obtain information 24 hours per day.

Please limit the patient’s personal effects to eyeglasses, hearing aids, dentures, toiletries, and a few items such as reading materials or a favorite pillow. Please do notbring clothes, live flowers, or food as they present storage, infection control, and dietary issues. Electrical devices must first be cleared by the on-duty nurse.

Visitors

Visitors are welcome, although we ask your assistance with the following guidelines:

- Each time, before entering the unit, call in on the phone outside the door to ask if your family member is ready to receive   visitors.
- No more than two visitors at a time.
- Visitors are limited to immediate family and significant others.
- No children under age 12, due to the risk of infection.
