Volunteers Make A Difference

Welcome to SMHC’s Volunteer Services where your very presence can make a difference. Whether it’s a difference in someone’s attitude, a difference in someone’s physical needs, a difference in someone’s spirituality or a difference in someone’s comfort, YOU can make that difference.

Volunteers are special people and have been a part of the strength of SMHC since the hospital opened. Everyone has some gift to give whether it is a skill, a talent or a smile. A helping hand is always welcome in a hospital and Volunteers over the years have provided that helping hand.

Sometimes Volunteers decide that hospital work is something they want to be a bigger part of and pursue a career in the medical field. Some Volunteer’s who have had a successful medical career feel they want to keep on contributing to this special endeavor… and they volunteer.

While Volunteers GIVE , they also RECEIVE!

Here are some examples:

Physical Strength:  You realize that you need to get up and get going because someone is depending on you!

Emotional Strength:  You will make lasting friendships with fellow volunteers, employees and even some of the patients.

Mental Strength:  By keeping your mind active you keep your mind healthy.

Spiritual Strength:  Reaching out to someone who is hurting gives hope, gives you courage and keeps you in touch with a higher power.

Working with Southern Maryland Hospital Center, YOU can make a DIFFERENCE!  We offer many positions throughout the hospital. An example of some of the areas our Volunteers staff are the hospital’s Front Desk, Surgical Waiting areas, Medical Records, Patient Floors, and some administrative areas. If there is an interest in a particular area, we try and find a placement for you.

If you are interested in Volunteering at SMHC, applications are available at the hospital’s Front Desk.  Please indicate if you are applying for our Youth “candystriper” Program (ages 14 – 17) or our Adult Program.
