Physicians at Fort Washington Women’s Health Center Now Performing
Noninvasive Permanent Birth Control Procedures
FORT WASHINGTON, MD – Nahid Mazarei, M.D. and Roshiel Tiu, M.D. of Fort Washington Women’s Health Center are now offering their patients two new methods of permanent birth control (sterilization). These procedures, known by the brand names Essure and Adiana, are noninvasive, highly effective, hormone free, and quick. Dr. Mazarei and Dr. Tiu can perform these procedures in minutes.
Essure and Adiana work by sealing off the fallopian tubes so that sperm cannot reach the egg. In both procedures, the physician reaches the fallopian tubes by threading a tiny tube called a catheter through the vagina, cervix, and uterus. In the Adiana procedure, the physician first releases a small amount of radiofrequency energy inside the fallopian tubes and then places a soft insert the size of a grain of rice inside. Over time, the body bonds with the insert, forming a barrier in the fallopian tubes and preventing pregnancy. Essure’s method is similar, but it does not use radiofrequency energy. Rather, it uses a flexible coil-shaped insert near the opening of the fallopian tubes, which also works with the body to create a barrier. After three months, a simple test confirms that the fallopian tubes are completely blocked.
Both techniques have significant benefits for women who are sure that they do not want any more children. Compared to other sterilization methods, such as tubal ligation, Essure and Adiana do not involve cutting into the body and do not require general anesthesia. And unlike many contraceptive methods, there are no hormones involved and the procedures do not interfere with the menstrual cycle. “Essure and Adiana can be great options for patients who want the benefits of permanent birth control without the risks of a surgical procedure,” said Dr. Mazarei. “We perform these noninvasive sterilization procedures in minutes, and patients are generally on their way in under an hour.” Most women can resume their normal activities in under a day.
These procedures are not reversible, so women should be sure they do not want to have children in the future before undergoing either one. Dr. Mazarei and Dr. Tiu are more than happy to consult with individuals to help them determine whether either of these procedures is right for them.
