Screenings and Tests

Free Blood Pressure Screenings
Monday - Wednesday, noon to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, noon to 8:00 p.m.; Friday, noon to 3 p.m. in the SMHC Solarium.

Health Express Van (HEV)
Available most weekdays and select Saturdays
Provides screenings year-round for blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, and FREE screenings for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).  HEV may be booked for events. (301) 877-5700. 

 Cardiac Risk Assessments
Basic Cardiac Risk Screening performed by the HEV in various locations. Includes cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose test ($5), and blood pressure check (FREE).

Cardiology Services
Performs EKG/Stress Tests/Holter Monitors/Echocardiograms (inpatient and outpatient), and Stress Echocardiograms. Tilt Table exams for vasovagal syndrome. (301) 877-5790

Cardiac Cath Lab
Performs cardiac catheterization diagnostics, left and right heart studies with cardiac output, and temporary and permanent pacemakers. (301) 877-5706.

Car Seat Safety Check
Third Saturday of each month, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Colony South Hotel Parking Lot
Car seat safety checks will be conducted FREE by certified technicians, by appointment only. Please call Mary Bair, Maternal Child Educator, at ( 301) 877-5740 .

Heartburn Treatment Center
The center offers immediate relief for chronic heartburn sufferers through a full array of state-of-the-art medical therapy as well as minimally invasive surgery. Care is provided by board-certified physicians and licensed practitioners specially trained in chronic heartburn management. Southern Maryland Hospital Heartburn Treatment Center, ( 301) 877-5780

The Asthma & Allergy Center
This program begins with a detailed evaluation including a complete medical history, physical examination, consultation with a pulmonologist, and a simple breathing test (spirometry). (301) 877-4616. 

Southern Maryland Hospital Center Transport Van
A convenient way to access outpatient health care services at SMHC when personal transportation is not available. FREE. (301) 877-HELP.

Volunteer Services

Vascular Services
This new program diagnoses diseases that pertain to blood vessels, including varicose veins, aneurysms, chronic occlusive arterial disease, arteriosclerosis, and deep vein thrombosis. (301) 877-4636.  

The Laboratory for Sleep Disorders
Office hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Recognized as the area’s premier provider of sleep disorder studies, our program offers its patients convenience and comfort in a quiet, professional atmosphere. Convenient locations in Clinton and Waldorf. (301) 877-4600.  

Education/Classes

Heart Failure Management Class
Fourth Tuesday of every month, 10 to 11 a.m. at the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Department. This class provides an understanding of heart failure, as well as its symptoms and management. FREE. Register at (301) 877-7370 .

Cardiac Risk Reduction Center
Don’t make time to be sick later, make time to stay healthy now.
Provides identification and management of chronic cardiac conditions and diseases. Patient will receive one-on-one assessment by a registered nurse and board certified cardiologist to identify their risk factors related to cardiac disease. The program is dedicated to reducing those risks, and assisting patients to make the appropriate changes to improve and protect their health based on nationally established goals. Freedom From Smoking
Addiction can be broken. Call about our smoking cessation classes. The program follows the format and recommendations of the American Lung Association who have been helping smokers for many years. Even if you have quit smoking before and started again, we can help you. Every time you quit, you are closer to permanent success. Call (301)  877-737 0 for more information. First session Free. Total Joint Replacement Class
Classes inform and educate prospective patients about total HIP and KNEE replacement. Preregistration is required. Classes are held every Tuesday and THursday from 3-4pm in the Rehabilitation Department. Call (301)  877-4562  for more information.  Class Fee: $0 /Free

CPR Health Care Provider Class (Certification/Recertification)
Open to the public twice a month.  Call for schedule.
This class covers adult one-rescuer CPR, pediatric one-rescuer CPR, adult two-rescuer CPR, and barrier devices. Fee: $45, includes book and AHA card. Preregistration required. Participants from the community must pay prior to date of class to confirm registration. Please register at the Cashier’s Office on the hospital’s first floor. (301)  877-4880 .

The First Year of Life
One Saturday a month, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and some weeknights, 7 to 9:15 p.m., SMHC Library. Learn newborn health, newborn care, first-year milestones, car seat safety, home safety, and infant CPR. Fee: $35 per couple. (301) 877-5740.

Breastfeeding Classes
One Saturday every month, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and some weeknights, 7 to 9:15 p.m., SMHC Library (ground floor) .Classes are taught by an international board-certified lactation consultant and all aspects of the breastfeeding process are examined. Fee: $20 per couple. (301) 877-5740.

Sibling Classes
One Saturday every month, 10 to 11:30 a.m. SMHC Library
The classes prepare 3- to 8-year-olds for what to expect when the new baby arrives. Parents should attend with child. Fee: $5 or FREE if delivering at SMHC. (301) 877-5740.

Prenatal Childbirth Class
One Saturday per month, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or some weeknights, 7 to 9:15 p.m., SMHC Library.This class prepares expectant parents for the labor and delivery of their new baby. Attend one night per week for four weeks OR a one-day Saturday class. Fee: $65 per couple. ( 301) 877-5740.

Parenting Class
Fridays, 6 to 8 p.m.
This 12-week class, facilitated by The Family Tree, is dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect. Open to those interested in family education and support. FREE. (301) 909-2318 . For the 24-hour Family Stress Line, call (800) 243-7337 .

Swimming Lessons

Support Groups

Alzheimer’s Support Group
Second Thursday of every month, 5 to 6 p.m., SMHC Library
Families learn how to handle different stages of Alzheimer’s disease from qualified health care professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to share strategies on how to deal with their daily activities. FREE.  (301) 877-5700 .

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Support Group

RTS Perinatal Loss
Third Tuesday of every month, 7 p.m., SMHC Library
This self-help group is designed for parents who have lost a child due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or neonatal death. FREE. Registration is required. Please call (301) 877-4374 and leave a message.

Mental Health Support Group
Second Tuesday of every month, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Colony South Hotel & Conference Center.Offers support and education to families/friends who are impacted by mental illness. Stroke Support Group
Fourth Thursday of every month, 5 to 6 p.m. Rehab Department
Provides support, education and understanding to individuals who have suffered a stroke, as well as to their family members. FREE.  (301) 877-4563 .

The C.A.R.E. and A.W.A.K.E. Support Group
Quarterly. Cardiopulmonary Rehab Department
The Cardiac, Respiratory and Sleep Apnea Education group provides information and support to individuals and their families for successful management and control of lung and breathing impairment, cardiovascular disease, and patients with sleep apnea. Prostate Cancer Support Group
Second Tuesday of every month, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Colony South Hotel & Conference Center.This support group offers informative monthly meetings for prostate cancer survivors and their families. FREE. No registration required. ( 301) 877-5700 .

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
Cardiac Rehabilitation at SMHC is a multidisciplinary approach toward recovery and prevention of additional cardiac events. The program’s emphasis is on assisting in the healing process and helping individuals make healthy lifestyle changes. (301) 877-7370

The Behavioral Health Partial Hospitalization Program
Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Arrangements can be made for full day or half-day participation; other hours by advance appointment.The Partial Hospitalization Program includes patient and family assessment; intervention/treatment/follow-up evaluation; multidisciplinary planning meetings; patient and family education; and referral and discharge planning. Diabetes Self-Management Program
A comprehensive service offered at SMHC that focuses on the intensive management of type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The program adheres to the National Standards for Diabetes Education established by the American Diabetes Association. Classes are taught by certified diabetes educators and cover all aspects of diabetes. They currently consist of four visits with us and are offered during the day and evening. (301) 877-5560 .

Arthritis Exercise
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., or 4:30 p.m., Colony South Fitness & Sports Club
Designed by the Arthritis Foundation for individuals who suffer from the disease or those who desire a supervised, low-impact, muscle-conditioning class. Fee for service. Physician clearance required. Call the Fitness & Sports Club at (301) 877-4806 .

Kids Club
Colony South Fitness & Sports Club
Kids Club membership is for children six to 17 years old and includes water aerobics, aqua fun and fitness classes, snorkeling, mini “boot camp” workout, pool access, Wallyball games, and tennis. All activities are instructed by certified fitness center staff. ( 301) 877-4806 .

NIA: Non-Impact Aerobics
NIA stands for neuromuscular integrative action. NIA is a non-impact aerobic workout that combines the movements of Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, modern dance and yoga. Freedom from Smoking
6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Cardiopulmonary Rehab Department
Freedom From Smoking can be yours with help from the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Department and the American Lung Association.  This program is offered on an ongoing basis and consists of eight weekly sessions designed to prepare and support your efforts to become smoke free.  There is a $60.00 fee that may be reimbursed by your insurance company. Stress Management Workshop
Bi-monthly, Second Thursday of every other month, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Colony South Hotel & Conference Center. Learn to be alert to the warning signs of stress and to take actions that will reduce stress and enhance your health and quality of life. FREE. (301) 877-7370 .

A Coping Skills Toolbox
Monthly SMHC Library
Boost your health-enhancing feelings of peace and calm, balance and relaxation, and relieve the emotional distress of anger, anxiety, depression, and sadness. This is a very effective, fun, and easy-to-do program. Fee for service. Call  (301) 292-5650 .
