Now Providing the Latest in Stereotactic Technology
Release: 2/28/2008

Clinton, Maryland - Southern Maryland Professional Radiology has expanded its health and wellness services available to women with the addition of the MultiCare Platinum™ stereotactic breast biopsy system from Hologic®. Among the most frightening words a woman can hear are "your mammogram is abnormal." It’s important for women to know 70 to 80 percent of the abnormalities discovered through mammography are non-cancerous.

When a breast biopsy is recommended for an abnormal mammographic finding, physicians can opt to refer their patients for a minimally invasive alternative to surgery known as stereotactic breast biopsy. The MultiCare Platinum is a state-of-the-art system designed to improve the quality, accuracy, and ease of breast biopsies. The system uses advanced computer-assisted technology, known as digital stereotactic localization, to map the precise site of a breast abnormality before a tissue sample is taken for biopsy. Samples can then be obtained through a very small incision in the skin, minimizing procedure time, tissue trauma, and wound healing time. The unique design of the system allows a woman to be in a prone position while the biopsy is being performed, for maximum comfort.

Our staff is highly trained and our equipment is state-of-the-art. Southern Maryland Professional Radiology is still currently the only facility in the southern Maryland region with Full-Field Digital Mammography. Combined with our Full-Field Digital Mammography, Breast ultrasound, Breast MRI capability and our newly acquired Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System, we now have one of the most comprehensive, patient friendly, versatile and state-of-the-art women’s diagnostic centers available in the area. We are committed to providing exceptional care to the women in our community.
