Sophisticated New MRI Technology Lands at SMHC - The GE Signa HDx MRI
Release: 12/1/2007

CLINTON, MD- Over the course of the last thirty years, Southern Maryland Hospital Center has maintained comprehensive, dedicated and successful efforts to keeping its operations in tip-top shape. In last month's feature about our Primary Stroke Center designation, we demonstrated that the SMHC trademark is placing the most versatile and cutting-edge tools in the hands of gifted and knowledgeable medical health professionals.

This month, we continue to keep our community here at SMHC updated on yet another bar-raising piece of technology-- the Signa HDx 1.5T MRI scanner.

Magnetic resonance imaging (or MRI) uses radio waves and a strong magnet field to produce detailed, cross-sectional images of the body. MR imaging allows medical professionals to look at some internal body structures that may not be as visible with other imaging methods.

But what makes our system so special?

The new Signa scanner --acquired by SMHC in late November-- features "High-Definition" technology, which lets its on-board computing system reconstruct images very rapidly. The result is near-real time image generation. Having this new MRI system means our facility is closely following significant advancements in imaging technology.

The system produces consistent image quality across its many versatile applications. And where such accuracy improves, so does patient benefit. With Signa's advanced apabilities doctors can perform exams that were traditionally difficult.

A propeller enhances brain imaging on all patients, including those who are unable to hold still. Another propeller feature called, "Propeller DWI" enhances stroke imaging.

"Brain Wave with Fusion" is a functional brain mapping tool that helps identify an appropriate course of treatment and monitoring, and yet another feature allows our staff to make non-invasive assessments of articular cartilage (articular cartilage is critically important for the movement of one bone against the other).

Breast MR gives our professionals the ability to see both breasts at the same time, which might keep patients from having to go through the breast imaging process twice. High-resolution multi-phase imaging of the liver and abdomen is also possible, as are other scans.

As you can see, Signa boasts a wide array of features. But the major highlight here is that it will help us help our patients. The improved quality and speed of MRI study with this system delivers more detailed information about those who come to us for care. In addition to shorter exams and fast, accurate diagnoses, there will be less stress and discomfort.
